The Incarnation: Advent Poem #5

I am covered in dust,

muck, grime, and scars.

Meanwhile You are clothed in

a blanket of stars.

And yet You threw off those covers

while retaining their shine,

and put on a covering

that’s similar to mine.

Hands that hold the universe

As a baby can’t hold a thing

Now familiar with deep weakness

Both a pauper and a King

Not random or an accident

But part of an eternal plan

In order to redeem us

Our Holy God became a man

We who’ve dwelt in darkness

Live in that place no longer

There is no need to fear the night

We’ve an advocate who’s stronger

Redemption’s light has dawned on us

Restoring Fellowship with the Father

Once we were slaves to the law

Now we’re called son and daughter

You comprehend our struggles

Because You’ve had them too

A priest who understands us

We can turn to You

You know what it is to suffer

You know what it is to mourn

Sharing in humanity’s experience

From the day that you were born

Eternal Son entered our world

Word made flesh before our eyes

Not exalted as You deserved to be

But lowly and despised

Voluntarily emptying Yourself

Taking a servant’s form

Flipping the order of society

Subverting the social norm

Rescuing the oppressed

And bringing justice to the poor

Breaking the chains of death and sin

And opening the door

To those who are held captive

To those who are afflicted

To the people in the margins

To those who’ve been restricted

Sharing in humanity

So that humanity could be saved

Bringing us the redemption

We oh so desperately craved

As a man, You could pay our price

As God, conquer the enemy

It was only as fully God and man

That You could set humanity free

King of the universe,

now wearing my skin.

Uncontainable God,

somehow contained within

the form of a human.

Oh this great mystery,

that You would visit here

to show Your love for me.
